It represents the force, or pressure, that is exerted on the walls of the blood vessels as your heart contracts.<\/p>\n<p>Because systolic blood pressure is always the highest number, it puts more stress on the vessels and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK9632\/#:~:text=Clinical%20trials%20have%20demonstrated%20that,%2C%20stroke%2C%20and%20HF%20events.&amp;text=Both%20observational%20studies%20and%20clinical,rates%20of%20overall%20BP%20control.\">should be considered more when assessing the risk of complications<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>What is diastolic blood pressure?<\/h3>\n<p>Your diastolic blood pressure is the second number, and it represents the force your blood exerts on the walls of blood vessels when the heart is relaxed. This is why it is always the lower number.<\/p>\n<p>The coronary arteries that supply the heart are only fed when the heart is relaxed. This means that diastolic blood pressure is the pressure the coronary arteries face. The symptoms will usually let you know to get checked, such as dizziness, blurred vision, and fainting.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"what-happens-during-a-blood-pressure-test\"><\/span>What Happens During a Blood Pressure Test?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>How a blood pressure test is conducted depends on the monitor being used, but there are some common elements.<\/p>\n<p>A cuff is fitted on the upper arm and inflated gradually. It will get tight enough for discomfort but not pain.
